One of the design challenges we face in designing our home in Bali, is how to create a contemporary home that is sympathetic to the Balinese aesthetic. We don’t want to build a home that looks like it could be anywhere in the world, nor do we want it to be so modern that it’s incompatible with our surroundings.
We live in Bali because we love Bali, and we want our home to reflect that. However, there are also aspects of modern architecture that we appreciate, like clean lines, open-plan living, light-filled rooms, and air conditioning!
Here are 5 ways we’re going to blend modern design with tropical traditions...
Embracing the Peaked Roof
Peaked roofs are synonymous with Balinese architecture, and this is one tradition we are fully embracing in our design. We may play with pitch and material, but we couldn't imagine living in Bali without their gorgeous high ceilings.
Bringing the Outside In
We'll be planting a lush tropical garden all around the house, and using as many glass walls as possible. Large pots growing native plants will also feature throughout the house.
Outdoor Bathrooms
Outdoor showers are common in Bali, and it's a tradition we have fully adopted. We're hoping to sneak at least one bathtub outside too!
Building with Indonesian Antiques
Rather than using Indonesian antiques as furniture or decor, we're going to try to incorporate traditional doors and wall panels into the fabric of the house. We're currently searching for antiques, and we'll design aspects of the floor-plan around what we find.
Mixing Natural Materials
We want to create a relaxed, comfortable vibe, using as many local materials as possible. So we'll be mixing bamboo, teak, and tiles made from local stones, as well as lots of rattan and traditional Indonesian textiles.
