Spencer Tunick's large-scale installations involve volunteers posing nude (often thousands at a time) in public spaces in different cities around the world, transforming landscapes and cityscapes. Despite the number of participants, and the logistics required, his work retains a palpable intimacy.
Over the years Tunick has focussed certain projects on raising awareness for global warming, rising sea levels, the rights of women and minorities, among other causes; his work gently urging viewers to think a little more deeply about important issues. His installations straddle the genres of sculpture and performance art and, paradoxically, they feel both public and personal, vulnerable and brave, all at the same time.
